The Australian Government has provided $640,000 under the Black Spot Program to improve safety at the intersection of the Great Western Highway and Macquarie Road, Springwood.
The project has been developed to improve road safety at the intersection by banning the right turn out of Macquarie Road, providing a safer left turn into Macquarie Road. Roads and Maritime Services carried out a four week trial of the proposal in November 2014.
Roads and Maritime has considered community feedback and the results of a four week trial and has decided to proceed with the proposal which includes:
- Installing signs and line markings restricting motorists to a left turn only
- Installing a 210 metre long concrete barrier on the Great Western Highway centre median
- Extending the westbound deceleration (slow down) lane by 160 metres for left turns on the Great Western Highway for vehicles turning into Macquarie Road.
This work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am from Monday 25 May to Monday 15 July, excluding Saturdays and public holidays, weather permitting.
Changed traffic conditions
Lane closures will be in place while the work is carried out to ensure safety of road users and workers. Road users are asked to follow the direction of traffic controllers, adhere to reduced speed limits and follow traffic signs.
There will be some noise associated with this work, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact on residents and businesses.
We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate the patience of residents and road users.
Up to date information, including any date changes and detours will be displayed on electronic message signs along the road.
